A poem (about the similarities between Bai Qian and Feng Jiu)

Updated: Apr 14, 2020

Every so often we come across humour that just can’t be passed off (this one has been making its rounds on Weibo) and it’s bound to tickle you…

Two Queens of Qing Qiu had two children.

For 300 years, one never met his mother. (refers to A Li, 阿离)

For 200 years, the other was unaware of his father. (refers to Bai Gun Gun, 白滚滚)

Once upon a time, Bai Qian jumped off the Execution Platform (诛仙台), while Feng Jiu jumped off a cliff (悬崖).

Both failed to be caught, one by Ye Hua* (夜滑,the actual Chinese character is 夜华), the other by Dong Hua* (东滑,the actual character is 东华).

Others who have children think of auspicious names.

But these two were contrarian.

For one was to get as far as possible, (the “li” in Ah Li is to leave me/get away from me “离我远去”)

The other to roll away. (“gun” means round but can also mean to scram away from my sight “滚一边去”)

Worthy of being Aunt and Niece.

(*Note that the word 滑 has the same sound as 华 in Dong Hua and Ye Hua. 滑 means slippery, thus both their inability to catch the love of their lives)
