Dang Dang Dang~the Mi Gu Three Lives Three Worlds class is here again.
Due to popular demand by our fellow sisters, we have decided to school everyone in the geography of the Three Lives universe today. We will be specially touching on the various named mountains within the Four Seas and Eight Realms mentioned in the Three Lives series.
This time, we will simplify things by directly introducing the geographical places in the same sequential order of the following books, [ Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms ] - [ The Pillow Book ] - [ Lotus Step ].
Within the Three Lives universe, the relationship of each species and locations to the various named mountains within the Four Seas and Eight Realms originated from the Chinese classic [ Classic of Mountain and Sea ].
When Sister Qi (Tang Qi) was collecting material for her stories from these ancient classics, most of it was organised to comply with the settings within these texts. At the same time, these classics also give the Three Lives series its meaningful interpretation.

He Ming Jun Ji Mountain
My mind was disorganised and clouded for a while, in one moment, it was all about the Eastern Realm and the Jun Ji Mountain, in another, it was Ye Hua’s face.

Within the Eastern Realm, where the sun and moon rise each day, there is a mountain named He Ming Jun Ji, Zhong Rong Country lies therein.

The He Ming Jun Ji Mountain, is sometimes referred to by its short name, Mt. Jun Ji.
This is where Su Su and Ye Hua faced the Eastern Realm’s great pool and took their marital vows. The story of Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms begins here.
In [ Classic of Mountain and Sea ], Mt. Jun Ji and Zhong Rong Country all originated from “The Expansive Eastern Realm”. These two places are both located in the Eastern Realm of the Four Seas and Eight Realms.

Zhao Yao Mountain
Mi Gu, the old man’s true form, is actually a Mi Gu tree. Since the Great Beginning, he was already growing on the Zhao Yao Mountain in the Northern Realm.

Magpie Mountain is an important mountain in the Classic of Northern Mountain. Zhao Yao Mountain lies before the Western Sea, overlooking it. It has many cassia trees, and plenty of gold and jade …… where there is wood, there is one shaped like a mulberry tree, it’s name is Mi Gu, if you carry one, you will not lose your way.

Finally, we are discussing my old home, the Zhao Yao Mountain in the Northern Realm. The Zhao Yao Mountain originated from the Classic of Northern Mountains found within the Classic of Mountain and Sea. On that mountain there is Mi Gu, and that is me — a Mi Gu tree, the best navigator of the Four Seas and Eight Realms, bringing me along with you means you will never lose your way. If you are a person with a poor sense of direction, it’s worthwhile owning one.

He Xu Mountain
At that time, Mother was pregnant and had a very strong craving for He Xu fruit found on the He Xu mountain, practically eating them like her main meals.

Since Feng Jiu assumed her aunt’s immortal duty and succeeded as the Queen of the Eastern Realm, half of the last 200 years was spent on attending school, the other half was spent forging this immortal spirit weapon. As she forged a sword from materials obtained from the He Xu mountains in the expansive realm, she named it the ‘He Xu Sword’.

Within the expansive realm, where the sun and moon rises, there is a mountain named He Xu.

The He Xu Mountain did not have important scenes and appeared twice in the books. In the Three Lives series, it is only a mountain located at the Eastern Realm’s mountain ranges. Feng Jiu’s He Xu Sword concealed during her Bing Cang ceremony was made by materials found there.

Kun Lun Mountain
Mo Yuan led me and Ling Yu out of Da Zi Ming Palace and hurried us back to Kun Lun, he stayed silent for the entire journey. Ling Yu had lost consciousness and hence, was even more silent.

Zhe Yan gathered his sleeves and coughed. With a mocking smile hidden in the corner of his eye to the tip of his eyebrow, he said to Mo Yuan, “Kun Lun was originally an immortal mountain that sprouted out of the top of dragon bones. Perhaps it sensed your impending return and was inspired to welcome you with dragon energy. This has attracted the clueless lesser immortals to Kun Lun.

Throughout the land, Kun Lun Xu is located in the North West, a city under a king. Kun Lun Xu has a radius of eight hundred li and is thousands of measures tall. It has wood grain at the top, it is five long and five around.

Kun Lun Mountain, the place where Mo Yuan undertook his father’s vocation and ran a school. Kun Lun sustained Bai Qian as Little Seventeenth during the time she was there as a university student learning her immortal arts and skills.
At the time of Mo Yuan’s reawakening, lucky omens appeared as dragon energy skyrocketed accompanied by dragon cries at the top of the mountain.
In ancient texts, there have been numerous scholastic mentions that the [ Classic of Mountain and Sea, Throughout the Western Land ] has a relatively detailed description of this.

West Mountain
The Bi Fang that Zhe Yan captured at West Mountain is none other than this immaculately dressed dear friend standing before me.

There is a bird shaped like a crane. It is one legged, red and green in colour with a snow white beak. It’s named Bi Fang, a strange name to call itself, it appears whenever a village has an impending fire disaster threatening them.

The West Mountain in the Classic of Mountain and Sea refers to a series of mountain ranges. Every time it repeatedly appears in the Three Lives universe, it is only referred to as the West Mountain and is an important dancing stage for Bi Fang and Fourth Brother (a.k.a. Bai Zhen).
After all, whenever Bi Fang gets himself lost, Fourth Brother will always head to the West Mountain to search for him.

Ye Hou Mountain
Over tens of thousands of years, within the Four seas and the Six Realms, I hid in Qing Qiu.
While I did not experience the kind of tragedy that will result in darkness taking over Heaven and Earth, I saw Qing Qiu’s large pool suffer from drought 779 times, and witnessed the Ye Hou Mountain, a mountain that only moves a foot every 100 years, travel from the cave residence of the Firefly clan all the way to the side of Father and Mother’s fox den.

Ye Hou means greeting someone in a respectful and welcoming manner. This mountain is an original creation by Tang Qi and is a mountain that moves.

Fang Hu Immortal Mountain
On the Third Day of the Ninth Lunar month, three years after Ye Hua passed on, I was watching a play in the mortal world and met Zhi Yue, a minor immortal who hailed from Fang Hu Immortal Mountain.

To an unknown millions of li to the east of Bo Hai, there is a large gully… There are 5 mountains within it: one, Dai Yi, two, Yuan Jiao, three, Fang Hu, four, Ying Zhou* and five, Peng Lai*.
… and Long Bo Country have people of great moral stature who are able to reach for the five mountains without walking many steps, and hook six successive mythological sea turtles in one fishing attempt, carrying them back to the country with plenty of enlightened bones**.
Hence, Dai Yu and Yuan Jiao Mountains moved to the north pole and sank into the great sea, scattering the holy seeds of immortality over a gigantic 100 million meter area, evoking change.

*The five mountains are used as an analogy here, both Ying Zhou and Peng Lai are where the fruit of immortality resides. That is why only people of great moral stature are able to reach for immortality without walking a longer way.
** This phrase means that the people of great moral stature are able to understand and spread the seed of immortality back in their country.
*** Lie Zi is a taoist philosopher who compiled eight chapters of text during the Wei - Jin era (3rd Century AD).
The Fang Hu Immortal Mountain, a legendary mountain originating from Pre-Qin mythology, is said to be a mountain residing outside the Middle Sea and is frequently named together with Ying Zhou and Peng Lai.
That’s right! This is the Ying Zhou where the Shen Zhi Immortal grass came from.

Fa Jiu Mountain
The winds of favour flowed fluently that day. The weather was fine and the air was clear. Exasperated by Seventeenth’s constant pestering, he finally took her to Fa Jiu mountain to catch the Jing Wei bird.

Further two hundred Li to the north, there is the Fa Jiu mountain. On it, there are Cudrania (Chinese Mulberry) trees and birds that look like crows with floral patterned heads, white beaks and red legs. They are named Jing Wei.
A maiden descended from the Fiery Emperor, Nu Wa travelled to Dong Hai. She drowned and reincarnated as the Jing Wei bird. It frequently carried wood and stone from Fa Jiu mountain to dam up the East Sea.

The Fa Jiu mountain in the [ Classic of Mountain and Sea ] is home to the Jing Wei bird.
Although it may not have many scenes in the Three Lives universe but it has an important significance.
If Seventeenth and Ling Yu did not go to Fa Jiu mountain, they would not have met Qing Cang who then captured them back to Da Zi Ming Palace, they would not have gotten to know Li Jing and be rescued by Mo Yuan, perhaps the final war between Qing Cang and the Heavenly Clan would not have happened the way it did.

Yu Ze Mountain, Zhong Hu Mountain, Qi Ling Mountain
Despite this, when the bridal escort entered Qing Qiu, and appeared majestically at Wang Sheng Sea on Yu Ze Mountain, Immortal Lord Mi Gu stood by the opposite bank of the sea with a towel in hand, feeling that he had perhaps underestimated Tian Jun.

Feng Jiu paused for a moment, and asked Si Ming who was kneeling on the ground in a state of pain, “The things you said before, about what’s her name… Qin Ji from Zhong Hu Mountain. Is it really true that she fancies my Fourth Uncle?

Amidst thunderous applause, Tian Jun looked below the stage, and asked knowingly, “Isn’t the dancer who just performed on stage, the Fairy Zhi He who was banished to Qi Lin Mountain three hundred years ago?

Zi Yue Mountain
According to verified sources, Lord Chang Yi of Zhi Yue Mountain developed deep roots of affection for Feng Jiu seventy years ago. It got out of hand all because he once had the blessing of witnessing her “elegance” when she was ill.

This forgotten old acquaintance of High God Zhe Yan was a master of mountain gods, and one who oversees the countless rivers and mountains in the three thousand large universes that contain the billions of mortal worlds. He resides in the Northern Realm’s Zi Yue Immortal Mountain, a place shrouded in layers of earth spirit mist, his honorary title, Immortal Lord Chang Yi.

Hua Fei Wu’s hometown was not an ordinary mountain. It was the Four Seas and Eight Realm’s Zi Yue Immortal Mountain, a place shrouded in layers of earth spirit mist. The master of the billions of rivers and mountains in the three thousand large universes, Immortal Lord Chang Yi, lives there.

Zi Yue Mountain is another original creation of Tang Qi, and it has many important scenes in the Three Lives universe. It is located in the Northern Realm and the place where Immortal Lord Chang Yi resides.
This was also the place where Feng Jiu rescued Meng Shao and gave him her cricket, General Chang Sheng and its clay jar.
Cheng Yu’s best friend in Lotus Step, Hua Fei Wu - a Peony flower monster - was the result of Immortal Lord Chang Yi watering the flowers with his cold tea.

Qin Yao Mountain
As she was young and insensible at that time, she decided to play at the Southern Realm’s Qin Yao Mountain by herself. She provoked a tiger spirit by accident, so it wanted to eat her. Luckily she was rescued by Dong Hua Di Jun who happened to pass by.

The Qin Yao Mountain is located in the Southern Realm. This was where Dong Hua Di Jun saved Feng Jiu for the first time and planted the seeds of their future. Hence, it can also be known as the place where the story of [ Three Lives Three Worlds, The Pillow Book ] began.

Fu Yu Mountain
Lian Song spoke in a mocking tone, “I heard you received Yan Chi Wu’s invitation to duel a few days ago, and will be heading to Fu Yu Mountain to entertain his challenge tomorrow. Zhong Lin even brought your sword to me for polishing, so why do I feel that you don’t look like someone who is about to head into a battle tomorrow?

Fu Yu Mountain is located in the demon controlled Southern Realm. It is the border shared by the Nine-tailed fox clan’s Eastern Realm and the Southern Realm. Towering high into the clouds, it is famous among both the God and Demon races.

Further eighty li to the west, there is a Fu Yu Mountain, it’s Yang energy is bronze, and its Yin energy is iron.

Fu Yu Mountain (符禹*山) had its name derived from a mountain with a similar name (符禺**山) found in [ The Classic of Mountain and Sea, Western Mountains ]. Dong Hua and Xiao Yan dueled at its peak twice. The first duel ended with Dong Hua falling into the Shi Er Lian Hua Realm. The second duel resulted in both Xiao Yan and Feng Jiu plummeting into Fan Yin Valley.

Bai Shui Mountain
True to Feng Jiu’s words, Dong Hua travelled to Bai Shui Mountain to search for the two legendary sacred ingredients to finetune the fragrance of his incense.

Bai Shui Mountain is one of the most dangerous and evil of all places. …… The mountain terrain is high and steep, and is said to rise sharply by a thousand measures. The sides are made up of short ends, and the center of the mountain is filled with swirling poisonous miasma all year round.
Most of the plant matter found there are poisonous, and the wild beasts in the area have an extremely violent and savage temperament due to long term exposure to such a vile environment. …… This is the reason why Min Su’s face turned ashen when she received the news that Xu Yang had issued orders to send her to Bai Shui Mountain.

500 years ago, Ji Heng was poisoned by the Qiu Shui poison while saving Min Su at Bai Shui mountain. Di Jun assisted them when they eloped to Fan Yin Valley that year. As Fan Yin Valley is not defiled by the impurities of worldliness, it was the best place to keep the Qiu Shui poison in Ji Heng’s body under control.

Bai Shui Mountain is located in the Southern Realm. This mountain top contains many important scenes from the Three Lives Universe. It’s name is derived from the white pool enclosed by the mountain.
Inside the pool, there is a dragon essence tree that grows every 10,000 years in the presence of the green lotus. As both plants rely on each other’s presence to grow, the lotus develops the fragrance of the tree, the tree stores the flower’s fragrance.
A ferocious water dragon resides in the middle of the pool, this dragon was none other than Meng Hao, one of the seventy two generals under Di Jun’s former command, who was also Ji Heng’s father. Min Su was kept in detention by Xu Yang and sent to Bai Shui Mountain.
Ji Heng went there to save Min Su but was injured by many poisons. Meng Hao sacrificed his life to save Ji Heng. Subsequently, the father and daughter pair ran into Dong Hua, who was there to obtain the stamen of the green lotus and the resin of the dragon essence tree.
Dong Hua made a promise to Meng Hao, agreeing to protect Ji Heng from harm, and help her find a way to cure her of the Qiu Shui poison. He also agreed to use the cover of a “false wedding” to help Ji Heng elope with Min Su.

Qi Nan Mountain, Duan Chang Mountain
Jiu Qu Mountain, Shi Kong Mountain
Two years later, rumours began circulating about Xi Ze resigning from his position as the Chief Spiritual Officer due to a grave illness, and retiring to the mountains behind Qi Nan Palace, passing on his position to Shen Ye.

It was evening when the dragon boat approached the shores of Duan Chang Mountain. The Duan Chang Cliff is located here, and under this cliff is the Ming Xi Bay.
…… Tonight was coincidentally the night the nearby villagers celebrate the Maiden Festival. The Maiden Festival was created as a way for unmarried men and women to meet and mingle in a joyous atmosphere in the hopes that they will find their predestined partners.
The villages in this area had a custom that had been practised for tens and thousands of years - on the night of the festival, unmarried young men and women don masks and socialise either in quiet parks or through participating in song and dance to express their feelings to people they love, and find their perfect match.
As it was a grand occasion to manage, the mountain had been reportedly sealed for the night.

The rock supporting the Jiu Qu Mountain was fashioned into this prison cage. It can only be considered a cage as it was only large enough for a person to crouch inside it.

The topography of Shi Kong Mountain is steep and narrow, and the spirit beasts guarding the Soul Protection grass are ferocious. If the Immortal Lord gets himself injured to help my sister, Ju Nuo, obtain the grass, that would be so unfair for my other sister, Aranya.

Qi Nan, Duan Chang, Jiu Qu and Shi Kong mountains are the four mountain ranges that uniformly enclose around Fan Yin Valley and are Tang Qi’s original creations.
The Qi Nan Shrine is located on Qi Nan mountain, Duan Chang Mountain is where Feng Jiu and Dong Hua don masks and participated in a joyous festival, and admired the beauty of the Yue Ling flowers together.
Jiu Qu mountain is where Aranya’s important storyline happened - the Jiu Qu cage incident. Shi Kong mountain is where Dong Hua risked his life to obtain the Soul Protection grass.

Tang Ting Mountain
Tang Ting Mountain is undisputedly worthy of being the Eastern Realm’s sacred mountain. Even after tens and thousands of millenia, it had remained verdant, lush and luxuriant, and did not appear to look old and weary.

Further 300 li east, there is a Tang Ting mountain. It has abundant trees and white apes, and rich reserves of crystal and gold.

Tang Ting mountain (堂亭*山), had its name derived from “Tang Ting mountain (堂庭**山)”. It is the sacred mountain of the Eastern Realm, and the location where the Qing Qiu monarchs participate in the Bing Cang ceremony.
The new monarch must personally forge a weapon and break through a ten men sword formation on the sacred peak of Tang Ting mountain using that weapon.
If successful in breaking the formation, the new lord can proceed with storing the weapon into its case and climb the Bai Ji grass steps to the peak of the mountain, conceal the weapon and complete the ceremony.

Da Yan Mountain, Gu Yao Mountain, Bo Zhong Mountain
Legend has it that during the era of Great Desolation, outside the East Sea, in the middle of the Great Realm, there is a Da Yan mountain where a pond of nine coloured lotuses grow. The flowers share the same roots, but each flower has a different colour, and also has different individual usefulness.
The red lotus can be used to brew wine, the purple lotus can be utilised as medicine, the white lotus can be used to make poison, and the yellow lotus can be used for whatever else.
As the Da Yan mountain is where the sun and moon rises, it’s spiritual energy is in abundance, hence, it wasn’t long before this lotus cultivated into a human form.
Goddess Zu Ti, who happened to pass by Da Yan mountain, enlightened her and bestowed her with a name, Shuang He, and she became Zu Ti’s immortal envoy.

During the era of Great Desolation, since the time Goddess Zu Ti was born from light in the Eastern Realm’s Gu Yao mountain, she had enlightened four immortal envoys: Hibiscus, Yin Lin, Nine Coloured Lotus, Shuang He, Female Emperor, Sang Xue Yi and Human Master Emperor, Zhao Xi.

Gu Rong was a rare beauty, the kind rarely seen on Heaven and Earth. The lord wanted to move her from Bo Zhong mountain to Gu Yao mountain.
Gu Rong named several terms, and he agreed to all of them, including not revealing her real face to anyone in her lifetime as mentioned by Shuang He in the past.

Outside the East Sea, in the middle of the Great Realm, there is a Da Yan mountain, where the moon rises.

Further two hundred li to the east, there is a Gu Yao mountain, the emperor’s daughter was buried here. Her body transformed into a pond, plants regrew, and yellow flowers bloomed. It resembled rabbit silk and made people happy after consuming it.

Further three hundred li to the west, there is a Bo Zhong mountain…… there is grass, and a plant that looks like the Coumarouna Odorata, it’s roots like the Chinese Bellflower, and a flashy, dark magnificence, it’s name - Gu Rong, and consuming it will render a person childless.

The mortal volume of [ Three Lives Three Worlds, Lotus Step ] has most of its content and scene settings in the Great Xi Dynasty, such as the large and small Yao Tai mountains at the outskirts of the capital city, Jing Ming mountain, Li Chuan city and the Qi Luo mountain, Yu Hu Snowy mountain, Zui Tan mountain, etc.
Collectively, these mountains form the mountain ranges surrounding the mortal world of the Great Xi Dynasty, and most of them are Tang Qi’s original creations.
When the story enters the main plotline in the Four Seas and Eight Realms, Shuang He’s birthplace of Da Yan mountain, Zu Ti’s birthplace of Gu Yao mountain and Gu Rong’s hometown of Bo Zhong mountains will gradually emerge, and will once again return to our familiar world of [ Classic of Mountain and Sea ].
I am looking forward to following the progress of [ Lotus Step ] and [ Bodhi Fate ] as they are written. So, which new mountain peak and ranges will Tang Qi bring us in the future?
